If you’re a homeowner looking to tile or retile your property this summer, there’re few things you’re better off knowing in advance. Especially, if you live in areas where summer waves can be brutal and the climate can be quite dry.
We’re talking grouting.
Grouting can be severely affected by elevated temperatures and dry conditions, leading to applications that can be ineffective and unreliable. It’s therefore important that you know what these concerns are and take steps to address them before they become a problem for you.
Heat concerns
Grout is best used when it’s at normal temperature, ideally between 25°C and 30°C. If it’s too hot, it won’t set in properly and will not cure either. Many homeowners ignorantly leave grout out in the sun or in another hot location, which causes the product to heat up. And then they wait ages for it to cool down before they can use it. To avoid this inconvenience and to protect your product, always store grout inside or in a shade.
Mid-day mixing concerns
Mixing grout during hotter parts of the day is a big no. It can cause the mixture to dry far too rapidly and result in improper application. It’s advisable to mix your grout during early hours of the day or in the evening when the temperature is relatively low.
Low moisture concerns
Low moisture concerns are common in dry climate, and if your grout is dry,it will not cure properly. To compensate for the dryness, some people add water to grout. However, it’s not a solution that we will recommend. Adding water to dry grout can result in efflorescence. A much better solution would be to cover the mixture with Kraft paper when you first produce it. Kraft paper helps grout mixture retain moisture.
Hot tile concerns
Heat not only affects your grout product, it also affects your tiles. If your tiles are too warm after being exposed to heat, they will pull moisture from the grout, increasing the chances of future cracking. Just like grout, store your tiles in a cool place.
