Did You Know?
The air within our homes can be two to five times more polluted than outdoor air. Yes, even in heavily industrialized cities, the air we breathe at home can be deadlier than the air we inhale when present outside—while walking on the road or driving in a car.
The United States Environmental Protection Agencyexpresses concerns over indoor air quality and how it affects us and our families.
However, unlike other health risks thatwe face when going about our day-to-day lives, we can take measures to improve indoor air quality and hence minimize the entailing health risks.
One way to control indoor air pollution is by installing carpets at home and inside other buildings.
Carpet flooring positively affects indoor air quality
Carpets were the first floorings that underwent thorough testing in relation to their effects on indoor air quality. The Carpet Rug Institute (CRI) collaborated with the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and independent research institutions to assess the role of a carpet in influencing indoor environment.
Following the findings, CRI established certain manufacturing standards—starting from Green Label Program in 1992—instructing and helping carpet manufacturers fabricate carpets that had low VOC content. Since then, new initiatives and standards have been introduced, which has helped carpets establish a reputation as the lowest emitter of VOCs of all flooring choices.
Besides lowering emission levels of volatile organic compounds, that otherwise pollute the indoor air with their presence, carpets also help improve indoor air quality by:
Serving to act as an air filter
Carpet fibers together form a three-dimensional entrapment structure, that traps allergens and particulate matter present in air. These particles are not only trapped by the carpet, but the flooring also ensures they do not easily get recirculated into the environment, even if someone walks across it.
That being said…
It’s important to note that carpets need to be cleaned regularly so that the trapped allergens, pollens and dust particles do not accumulate inside the fiber meshwork. This not only reduces the life of a carpet, but can also make it look dirty.
For routine maintenance, weekly vacuuming of carpets is recommended. However, you should also get it professionally cleanedby a carpet cleaning service expert at least once a year, to make sure it’s deep cleaned.
