Over the past few days, you’ve been noticing something strange about your carpet…
It’s gaping away from the walls of your room!
And if you’re to remember it correctly, this wasn’t the case to begin with.
Of course, why would you have paid the carpet installation company had they installed the carpet incorrectly.
So what’s actually happening to your carpet?
It’s shrinking!
Surprised?
And do you know what has caused it to shrink?
Nah, not the natural wear (we already blame the process enough), but the inappropriate carpet cleaning practices to which your carpet has been exposed to.
But when, how, where?!
Recall, if you ever:
Exposed you carpet to excessive soaking while cleaning
Excessive soaking is one of the most common causes of carpet shrinkage.
Homeowners, in an attempt to clean that deeply set stain on their carpets, will usually use large amounts of water to try to remove it. Using too much water, increases the chances of water penetration into the carpet, and the excess water ends up finding its way down to the bedding.
As bedding absorbs the excess water, it becomes susceptible to shrinkage. And if left to stand wet for long hours, the bedding “will” shrink.
Used water, that was too hot to clean your carpet
Steam cleaning is an effective professional carpet cleaning method. However, to save money on the job, many homeowners prefer to rent a domestic grade steam cleaner and steam clean their carpets on their own. These domestic grade steam cleaners are not really good at regulating the temperature of stored water. Using water that is too hot can cause a carpet to shrink.
Also, because different carpets have different make up, not all types of carpets can be treated to hot water. Some can only be cleaned with cold water, while some require mild hot water for cleaning.
Since homeowners are unlikely to have the knowledge of how hot water should be (to best suit their carpet’s makeup), they may ignorantly end up using water that is too hot for the liking of their carpets. As a result, their carpets might shrink.
So what can you do about your shrunken carpet?
Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do to restore your shrunken carpet to its original state. Things that shrink don’t ever grow back, certainly not carpets.
However, one thing you can try is, you can ask your carpeting company to provide you with cut pieces. If you’re lucky, they may have them. You can then install these cut pieces to cover your carpet flaws. Although, not an ideal solution, it’s the only solution you may have.
Besides that, avoid the cleaning mistakes which we have just discussed, when cleaning other carpets of your home. You can’t do anything about this one, but you can save your other carpets.
Also, we will recommend that whenever you want to deep clean your carpet, hire a carpet cleaning company rather than doing the job on your own. It’s better to be safe than sorry.
